EFCC to move to South East


– The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has said it convicted 14 people in the South east between January and October 2016

– The commission said a total of N244.57 million has been recovered so far by the commission’s South East zone

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, October 19, said it secured 14 convictions in the South East.

The commission’s spokesperson Wilson Uwujaren said the convictions were secured within the past 10 months (January to October) while N244.57 million has been recovered so far.

Babalola disclosed that $955,465;

€10,000 and 3,588 Chinese RMB were also recovered by the zone.

Also among assets forfeited during these months include: $130,750 which had been paid into the coffers of the federal government.

The South East zonal head also noted that a total of 522 cases are currently under investigation.

He also said investigation on 36 of the cases have been concluded and charged to various court across the zone for further prosecution.

Babalola said among the cases currently being investigated by the zone are a N4 billion advance fee fraud involving one chief Patrick Nwokike of “let’s partner with you” and another N9 billion involving one Joshua Morah, the chief executive officer of Borec services.

He also advised members of the general public to be wary of activities of fraudsters who fleece people of their money.

Meanwhile, the EFCC has asked Nigerian lawmakers to allow the commission receive some percentage from recovered loot.

The EFCC said such arrangement is a standard practice in developed countries.

The commission also lamented the low conviction of people prosecuted of corruption in Nigeria.
